Natural cold-pressed oils – who doesn’t know them? They ensure flawless beauty care and have been setting face, body and hair care trends for a few years now. You can read about their brilliant properties everywhere. They heal all skin conditions, eliminate wrinkles, make hair denser, hold back hair loss. It’s all true – natural oils have no flaws… on condition that you store them the right way. Sadly, not every beauty blog mentions that. If you want to know how to store your precious oil so that it doesn’t go rancid or lose its properties – read the following article.
How to store natural plant oils?
1. How to store natural oils – leave them cold
Most oils used for beauty purposes like the cold. Why? The answer is logical: they don’t go rancid but they keep their valuable ingredients, that is vitamins, minerals, carotenes, flavonoids and phytosterols. Therefore, if there aren’t any instructions for use and the best storage temperature on the label, keep your oil in the refrigerator. Obviously, some of them don’t have to be kept there and can stand on the shelf in the bathroom (e.g. argan oil, avocado oil or macadamia oil) but most of them are happy to welcome a little cooler environment.
2. How to store natural oils – give them some warmth
On the other hand, natural plant oils like warmth too – obviously it doesn’t mean you should keep them in warm environment all day long. If you warm up an oil before use, it works much better because its sorption abilities develop and consequently your skin and hair absorbs them effortlessly. You can heat up some of them to high temperatures whereas others don’t like it. You must also make sure you don’t overheat your oil and don’t disturb its qualities. The best thing you can do is carefully read the labels and follow the instructions.
3. How to store natural oils – they like being in a couple
If you’re afraid your oil is reaching its expiry date or it’s extremely mild and goes rancid quickly – you can extend the date by preserving it. Mix it with hyaluronic acid – you will get a repairing and antiaging cosmetic. Hyaluronic acid also makes the oil penetrate deeper layers of the skin.
4. How to store natural oils – no crowds
Don’t buy many oils at a time. If you get two different oils which don’t make a good match, the duo will have a poor effect on your skin or hair and the oils won’t support each other. So if you don’t have advanced knowledge on the various types of oils and their benefits, and you only rely on the labels – go for one oil and check how it works on your skin and hair. What’s more, if you buy a few oils at a time, you won’t use them up because they hold out really long – consequently, you will have to throw them away without getting to know their real power and potential.
5. How to store natural oils – find a dark spot
When it comes to the storage of plant oils, you should keep them in dark places, ideally in glass containers. Exposed to the sunlight, oils go rancid fast and thus become useless. Purchase dark vials having interesting shapes or keep the dark bottles of your old oils to pour the oils that the manufacturer carelessly put in the clear glass bottles. Luckily, producers usually launch oils in dark bottles to keep them from going off.
Summing up, remember that even an oil you store properly in the fridge has its expiry date and you shouldn’t use it after the date even if it looks fine and isn’t cloudy – it simply loses most of its nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Get a fresh plant oil and use the old one e.g. for a DIY furniture polish or oiling the screeching door… Never apply a rancid oil to your skin or hair. Only a fresh oil guarantees great hair and skin benefits.
